Only a Madrid miracle can stop Barcelona winning La Liga now
The title is edging ever closer to Barcelona. Luis Enrique's side swept aside city rivals Espanyol in a potentially tricky test on Saturday and are now in an almost unassailable position with five fixtures left in La Liga.

The Catalan derby is often a complicated clash for the Blaugrana, but this one was all but over after 25 minutes. Barca, with 80 per cent possession in the first half, created a number of chances early on and finally cracked their rivals' resistance as Neymar slotted home a magnificent move after 17 minutes.

Lionel Messi had dropped deep into midfield, once a sign of frustration for the Argentine attacker. Not now. These days, Messi moving into the centre of the park spells only one thing: danger. The 27-year's old fantastic forward pass for Jordi Alba completely opened up Espanyol's defence, the full-back squared, Luis Suarez dummied and Neymar netted from close range. It was a goal that summed up Luis Enrique's Barca at their brilliant best - and the visitors never looked back.

Another impressive move made it 2-0 eight minutes later and this time it was Messi on the scoresheet from a tight angle. Luis Suarez had been in an offside position, yet few could claim Barca didn't deserve it and even the strange sending off of Alba in the second half could not dampen the spirits of the Liga leaders as they remained on top to open up a five-point lead over Madrid ahead of the Blancos' visit to Celta Vigo on Sunday.

Celta have already beaten both Barca and Atletico this term and a trip to Balaidos will be no walk in the park for Carlo Ancelotti's side, who still have players out through injury and needed a monumenal effort to beat Diego Simeone's side in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Madrid (who need to finish level on points to claim the title courtesy of their superior head-to-head record in the two games against Barca) then face Almeria at home before a tough trip to Sevilla (unbeaten at the Sanchez Pizjuan in over a year) and a difficult date with Valencia at the Santiago Bernabeu - those two matches either side of their game at Juventus in the semi-finals of the Champions League. Ancelotti's men then close La Liga with a visit to Espanyol and a home game against Getafe.

Barca, meanwhile, have now come through the majority of their most difficult matches in the final straight, having claimed a draw at Sevilla, beaten Valencia last weekend and claimed all three points again on Saturday. Luis Enrique's side finish La Liga with Getafe at home, Cordoba away and Real Sociedad at Camp Nou, before their toughest test - a trip to the Vicente Calderon to face Atletico - and finally a return to the Catalan capital for the visit of Deportivo La Coruna on the last day of the season.

The game in Madrid comes just several days after the semi-final second leg away to Bayern Munich and could leave Barca tired, but rotations by Luis Enrique earlier this season have left the Catalans' far fresher than Madrid, with no major injury concerns either.

"We played our best first half of the championship," the Asturian coach said after the win against Espanyol. "The Liga's most important stretch is approaching now, but I don't think my players will lose concentation because of the Bayern tie."

And midfielder Andres Iniesta added: "All of our matches are finals now."

Barca cannot afford to slip up as La Liga reaches its climax, but all of their remaining fixtures are winnable (including the game against Atleti, beaten three times by Luis Enrique's side already in 2014-15).

Meanwhile, Real have it all to do with injuries, a much more difficult set of fixtures and a two-point deficit to make up as well, for which they will probably need a hand from Atletico. So only a Madrid miracle can stop Barca from winning La Liga now.

Luis Enrique: Ibrahimovic's failure and Suarez's success at Barca baffles me

Luis Enrique: Ibrahimovic's failure and Suarez's success at Barca baffles me

The Swede only spent one season in Catalunya before returning to Italy, while the Uruguyan has established himself as a star man for the Blaugrana

Barcelona boss Luis Enrique is baffled as to why Luis Suarez has succeeded where Zlatan Ibrahimovic failed by flourishing at Camp Nou.
Ibrahimovic arrived in Catalunya from Inter in 2009 for a reported €70 million but, despite a bright start to his Blaugrana career, the outspoken Swede returned to Italy after a solitary season in which he had a bitter falling-out with then coach Pep Guardiola.
Suarez, meanwhile, initially struggled to prove himself worthy of the €94m transfer fee Barca had paid Liverpool for his services, but his form has improved steadily since the turn of the year and is now back playing at his very best.
With Ibra set to face his former club on Tuesday as Paris Saint-Germain take on Barca in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, Luis Enrique was asked to compare the two striker's contrasting fortunes at Barca.
"I don't know why Suarez has fitted in at Barcelona better than Ibrahimovic," the coach stated. "His goals took a while to arrive but I can only praise his performance and his work ethic.
"Although you sign a top player, you never know how he will adapt to the team or the city. Those handicaps can go against you but in the case of Suarez he has adapted very quickly. Some players take a while to adapt and others do it fast."

Ibrahimovic was forced to sit out last week's first leg through suspension and the prolific striker was missed, with Laurent Blanc's men slumping to a 3-1 home defeat.
The 33-year-old is now set to make his return to the starting line-up for the return tie, but Luis Enrique insists that the forward's inclusion will not alter his tactical plan.
"Ibrahimovic is back in the team but that doesn’t change matters because PSG will play with the same style," he stated. "We sometimes change it to create more problems for the opponent but not because of individual players.
"The opponent suffered a bad result in the first leg, and they will be looking to win by using every weapon they have. Our objective is clear: we want to win this match.
"I can’t say who stands a better chance of progressing. We need to play another great match to get through, that’s the truth.
"I would say we are at our highest level at the moment but tomorrow we will have to be in top form to face PSG."

PSG midfielder Marco Verratti also missed the first leg through suspension and Luis Enrique expects the Italian to have a big impact on the game, admitting that the 22-year-old is good enough for a place in Barca's much-vaunted midfield.
"Verratti has always been good enough to play for any team," the former Spain international added. "I love the player, ever since I saw him for the first time."
Barca are the favourites to win this season's Champions League in many pundits' eyes, particularly with Lionel Messi in such sensational form.
However, Luis Enrique was keen to play down his side's prospects, while at the same time praising his Argentine No.10 for reaching 400 goals for Barca in Saturday's 2-0 win over Valencia.
"Messi is at his best at the moment," he added. "He is very fit and has scored his 400 goals, which is an impossible figure really - he is unique," he continued.
"But we are not favourites to win the Champions League. We are a candidate for the semi-finals -  so are PSG and every other participant.
"Four will qualify but any of the eight teams left can win the competition."

Barcelona in line to bid for Pogba despite still serving ban

Barcelona in line to bid for Pogba despite still serving ban

FC Barcelona are preparing to bid for Juventus superstar Paul Pogba in the next transfer window, and should the bid be successful, the Spanish side will loan the French international back to the Serie A giants for the next six months.
The Spanish giants will only be able to sign players in January 2016 following a 1-year transfer ban by FIFA after they were found guilty of repeatedly breaching transfer regulations.
Midfield maestro Xavi is set to leave FC Barcelona this year for Qatari club, while Andres Iniesta’s days at Camp Nou are numbered after he failed to score or assists a goal in over a year now.
Should the duo leave FC Barcelona in the near future, Paul Pogba will be a perfect replacement as the French star is making the headlines with his glowing performances at Serie A leaders Juventus and he has attracted interested from big name clubs across Europe.
The 22-year old is likely to win the Italian league title for the 3rd year running since his arrival from Manchester United in 2012. At Juventus, he plays alongside Chile international Arturo Vidal, and should he arrive at FC Barcelona he will likely line-up with Ivan Rakitic and Javier Mascherano in the three-man midfield.
Paul Pogba’s agent has told media that FC Barcelona are willing to table a hard-to-turn-down offer to Juventus as they try all their best to beat Real Madrid, Chelsea, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, and other European teams to the creative midfielder's signature.
English Premier League side Chelsea, tabled £65 000 000 to Juventus but their bid was slapped by the Italian club, with the belief that their man is worth around £100 000 000.
